Having grown up the youngest of four brothers in a family of six, with little financial resources, I relied on my creativity for fun. Luckily, we had a big back yard with  enough trees to get lost, build forts, or adventure through imaginary worlds. This creativity saved from all levels of schooling that I found monotonous. Whether I was  making art, music, or writing stories, I found how fulfilling the act of creation was. I’m still fascinated by how we can take our most painful experiences and turn them  into beautiful, maybe heartbreaking, but beautiful art.

During my teenage years, I felt trapped in my house and at school which lead to some self-destructive behaviors to cope with my anger. It wasn’t until later that I realized it’s better to build something rather than break it. Thankfully, my artistic talents helped me through negative experiences. Playing guitar, writing songs, and performing for an audience is the best source of emotional release for me.

Throughout college, I continued writing stories, journaling, and performing which helped me connect with many artists and build lasting friendships. I also started focusing more on my physical  health. While I ran cross country and track in high school, I worked more on lifting weights and biking. When something was wrong, instead of letting it sit inside me, I learned the value of physical activity or journaling as a means of letting negativity out and building strength instead of keeping it inside and letting the negativity break me down.

After college, I briefly taught high school English, while teaching wasn’t my dream, I still want to help people find the best outlets for their experiences. I want to help people find something to build instead of letting negative experiences bring them down.
