Daily Living Skills Training

My name is Bill, and I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. I was always one of those class
clowns that never accomplishes much academically, but I enjoyed sports and music, both of
which I excelled at. I competed in a variety of sports growing up, including soccer, baseball, and
wrestling, and I participated in the WSMA High School Honors Jazz Ensemble my senior year.

My recovery journey began in October of 2001, after I was arrested for my 5 th OWI. I
had been in and out of jail for the past 12 years, and this time I was facing a possible 5 year
prison sentence. During this time, I struggled with Depression, PTSD, Survivor Guilt, and
Substance Abuse, and I am a Survivor! I had relapsed in August of 2000 after a construction
an accident claimed the life of a co-worker, which caused me to experience these symptoms.

In 2012 I decided to change careers from carpentry to Substance Abuse Counseling,
receiving my SAC-IT license in September of 2013. I have worked in the recovery field since
that time, and currently hold a Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor license in the State of
Wisconsin. Since starting my recovery work, I have worked with Veterans, Homeless
Individuals, Persons Incarcerated and on Probation, with all types of Substance Use Disorder.

Things that helped me in my early recovery were attending several AA meetings per
week, attending a church near my home, attending individual substance abuse counseling, and
seeking out volunteer opportunities to fill my free time with sober activities. Today I still
volunteer with abused children several days per month, to empower them to not feel afraid of the
world they live in. I enjoy spending my free time exploring Wisconsin State Parks, working out several times per week, and listening to music.

I am looking forward to sharing my recovery experiences with others to improve their quality of life, and to share what recovery has brought to me.
