Individual Skill Development and Enhancement
My name is Steve Sorenson. Originally from Wauwatosa, my 3 brothers, parents, and I all moved to Hartland when I was 5. I was raised in a good family, developing close relationships with immediate and extended family members; but was and am especially close with my three brothers. I loved to be active, explore, and create as a kid. I had two near death experiences before the age of 6 which resulted in serious trauma, but mostly my childhood was pleasant; however, I lived inside ‘a bubble’ of Lake Country and didn’t know much about the world.
I received a scholarship to play golf at Colorado State in 2010, and when I got to Fort Collins I was like a tiger just released from its cage. I never had experienced that sense of freedom because growing up my parents very much sheltered my brothers and I. Without restraint, I more than dabbled into the world of drugs and alcohol, and during my sophomore year I broke my wrist, failed an NCAA drug test, and fell into a deep depression.
I quit the CSU Golf Team and returned to Wisconsin in 2012. I was in the north woods that summer when an awakening of some sort took place. I began to think, feel, and sense at a heightened level and began to see the world from an intuitive perspective. My parents saw this change in a different light and along with many other family members, convinced me to check myself into a psychiatric hospital. For years I would flee the state, going on road trips to explore the country, doing everything in my power to escape the system. I felt like I had a special view of the world, only to get that taken away by psychiatry.
After years of my parents tracking me down, third party petitioning me, and being placed back in the system, I received a charge that forced me to go to a recovery house. There I gave sobriety and medication an honest shot and listened to suggestions from others. I began to realize what turmoil and damage I had been causing the world around me. I began to care for my body, mind, and spirit, and started to realize that changing my thinking would change my life. I started to see the beauty and purpose in every individual and how that purpose and beauty inter-relates to the world as a collective.
Recovery has granted me the ability to develop my interests; some of which include Warhammer, Pokémon, anime, meditation, making music, playing sports, working out, creating art, spirituality, connecting with nature, learning new languages, etc. I love the journey of life and look forward to meeting new people in this program, working with participants, and connecting in new and interesting ways. I enrolled in this program because I believe in other people and desire not to give truth to others but to guide others in finding their own truth within themselves.
